Introduction
I. God’s Eternity and Our Frailty (vv. 1–6)
- Moses begins with a foundation for Advent hope.
- He begins with God as “the substance and source of all things.”
- Moses then turns to us. Mortality is a theological statement.
II. God’s Wrath and Our Sin (vv. 7–11)
- Moses does not blame aging or biology for death.
- Death entered the world through sin. That is the central diagnosis of Psalm 90.
- Death is the proof of divine displeasure.
- Moses tells us our sins lie open before God.
III. God’s Mercy and Our Hope (vv. 12–17)
- The hinge of the psalm is verse 12.
- Wisdom is seeing life in light of eternity.
- God does not promise a pain-free life. He promises a joy deep enough to endure pain.
- We cannot make our lives last. God can make them matter.
