Biblical Theology — Week 14: The Role of Typology
The themes of temple, priesthood, and kingship carry a built-in restlessness — every earthly expression was provisional, leaning forward toward Christ, who completes what each type anticipated.

  • A type is a divinely intended pattern established in redemptive history in which an earlier person, event, or institution genuinely corresponds to and prefigures a later, greater fulfillment in Christ.

  • Types are:
    • Historically real
    • Divinely designed
    • Escalating...each expression is greater than the last

The Three Themes
Temple: Eden → Tabernacle → Temple → Christ → Church → New Creation
  • How can a holy God dwell with sinful people?
  • Answer: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up" (John 2:19–21)

Priesthood: Aaronic → Repeated sacrifice → Fulfilled in Christ
  • How can sinful people approach a holy God?
  • Answer: One priest, one sacrifice, permanent atonement (Heb 9:12; 7:25)

Kingship: Davidic covenant → Messianic hope → Eternal reign
  • Who will rule the world as God's appointed representative?
  • Answer: Christ is enthroned through resurrection, reigning now, & consummated at His return (Acts 2:29–36)

Why These Themes Matter
  • Two movements run through every type:
    • Escalation — each iteration is greater than the last
    • Fulfillment — each type has a destination: Christ
  • Christ completes these themes; He does not cancel them. The foundation is not abolished when the building rises from it; the building is the purpose of the foundation (Matt 5:17).

Discussion:
  • What problem does this theme address?
  • How does Christ resolve it?
  • Where do you see this theme in your own life?
