Sermon Outline Nov 6, 2022

1 John 5:6-13

1 John: what does a person who’s been born of God look like?
  • Believes in the Jesus of the Bible: Fully man, fully God, Christ, Messiah, Savior, one with God the Father.
  • Loves God.
  • Loves His church.
  • Loves and keeps His commands.
  • And last week, a person born of God overcomes the world.  Not just in heaven, but now.

The witness of water (vv6-8)
  • We want to think baptism—not simply immersion by water.
  • John 1:19-23—refers to Isaiah 40:3 prophesy
  • Matthew 11:10—Jesus confirms who John the Baptist is.
  • John 1:29-34—When John says “water” he’s bringing these together & recognizing this is what God used John to reveal, that Jesus is the son of God (v34).
  • Matthew 5:30-37.  At Jesus’ baptism, God Himself speaks and testifies.
  • Why did Jesus get baptized?  Matt 3:13-17— Jesus says it is to “fulfill all righteousness.”  To fulfill all the law, all the commands, and to be perfectly righteous, Jesus had to be baptized.
  • And so because Jesus perfectly fulfilled all righteousness…then he could go to the cross as a sacrifice.

The witness of blood (vv6-8)
  • Jesus’ atoning work on the Cross for the wages of sin—Hebrews 9:22
  • 1 John 1:7—the blood that ends need of any other shedding
  • Heb 9:15—promised eternal inheritance
  • Points to the totality of Christ’s work on our behalf.
  • Work of atonement occurs so we’re reconciled w/God.

The witness of the Spirit (vv6-8)
  • The internal witness of the Spirit (v10a)
  • The contrast with those lacking the Spirit (v10b) is a warning to repent—there is no neutrality

What is the truth that the 3 witnesses testify? (vv11-13)
  • Eternal life—the promised eternal inheritance.
  • Eternal life is God-given.  It is a gift.
  • Eternal life and Jesus are inseparable.
