Matthew 1:1-17

Introduction: Where are you from?

Jesus in the Old Testament
  • The Son of Abraham –Genesis 12:1-3, Genesis 13:16, Genesis 15:5, Galatians 3:16…28-29
    • The offspring of Abraham. The one through whom all the promises to Abraham will be fulfilled.
  • Son of David -2 Samuel 7:12-13
    • The King who is to sit on David’s throne.
  • Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people. Apart from the Old Testament, there are no promises to fulfill.
  • Lesson for Children (and all of us): 2 Corinthians 1:20
    • God has promised us nothing apart from what is in His Word, but we can be hopeful, we can be certain, that those promises in His word are fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

The Generations
  • Abraham to David (Promise of Offspring & Kingship) Hope Promised
  • David to Jechoniah (Babylonian Exile) Hope Challenged
  • Jechoniah to Jesus (Fulfillment of Offspring & Kingship) Hope Restored
  • Lesson for Children (and all of us): Lamentations 3:21-24
    • Our hearts may lament, but God has revealed to us in His Word & in Christ, that He is faithful.

The Significance of the Inclusion of Women
  • Tamar (Genesis 38)
  • Ruth (Book of Ruth)
  • Rahab (Joshua 2)
  • Wife of Uriah, Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11)
  • Lesson for Children (and all of us): Genesis 50:20, 1 John 1:9
    • Our sinful pasts (and our future sins) do not catch God off-guard. It is the conviction of that sin that draws us to repentance that we might be forgiven.
