Text: Psalm 51 & 2 Samuel 12
Prologue: Setting the Scene
I. The Moment of Exposure (2 Samuel 12:7-10)
- Spurgeon: “The sword of conviction cuts that it may cure.” We often pray for revival, but revival never comes without confrontation.
- Before there can be mercy, there must be truth.
II. The Moment of Confession (Psalm 51:1-6)
- He admits that his problem isn’t just behavior—it’s nature. “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity.”
- You can’t disinfect a corpse. Sin isn’t a surface stain; it’s spiritual death.
III. The Moment of Cleansing (Psalm 51:7-12)
- David is reaching for blood. He knows forgiveness is costly, that sin demands sacrifice.
- Spurgeon: “The penitent turns priest and pleads the blood of atonement.”
- But what David could only imagine, Christ fulfilled.
IV. The Moment of Praise (Psalm 51:13-17)
- Spurgeon: “The burnt offering of the broken heart flames best upon the altar of love.”
