3. Classical Apologetics
Key idea: Use philosophical arguments to demonstrate God’s existence before presenting the gospel.
Common arguments:
- Cosmological argument (first cause).
- Teleological argument (design).
- Shows belief in God is rational.
- Risks granting too much autonomy to human reason.
4. Evidential Apologetics
Key idea: Present historical and scientific evidence supporting Christianity.
Examples:
- Evidence for the resurrection.
- Manuscript reliability of Scripture.
- Design in nature.
- Helpful in demonstrating the credibility of Christianity.
- Evidence alone cannot overcome the sinful heart.
5. Presuppositional Apologetics
Examples: Cornelius Van Til, Greg Bahnsen
Key idea: Every worldview begins with presuppositions & Christianity must be the foundation for logic, morality, and knowledge.
Method:
- Expose the internal contradictions of unbelieving worldviews.
- Show that only the Christian worldview makes knowledge possible.
- Takes the authority of Scripture and the noetic effects of sin seriously.
6. A Biblical Balance
Scripture uses multiple approaches:
- Paul reasoned in synagogues (Acts 17).
- He appealed to creation and conscience.
- He proclaimed Christ crucified.
- The key is that Christ remains central and Scripture remains authoritative.
7. Discussion & Application
Questions:
- What strengths do you see in each apologetic approach?
- How can we keep apologetics rooted in Scripture while engaging real questions?
- Why must the work of the Holy Spirit remain central?
