Week 17: Biblical Theology and Missions
Theme: God's Global Plan of Redemption

Objective: Understand that missions is not merely a church program but the outworking of God's eternal redemptive purpose revealed throughout Scripture.
Key Idea:
The mission of the church exists because the mission of God precedes it. From Genesis to Revelation, God is gathering a people from every tribe, language, people, and nation for His glory.

I. The Missionary Thread Through Scripture
A. The Promise to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3)
  • Genesis 12:1-3.
  • God chose Abraham for a purpose larger than Israel.
  • The covenant contains:
  • A people
  • A land
  • A blessing
  • New Testament Confirmation (Galatians 3:8.)

B. Israel's Calling Among the Nations (Exodus-Isaiah)
  • Exodus 19:5-6.
  • What does a priest do?
    • Represents God to people.
    • Represents people before God.
  • Israel was intended to display God's glory to the nations.
  • Isaiah 49:6
    • Examples:
      • Rahab
      • Ruth
      • Naaman
      • The Queen of Sheba
      • These anticipate a larger gathering of the nations.

C. Christ and the Nations (Matthew 28:18-20)
  • Jesus does not create a new mission.
  • He advances the ancient mission.
  • Because Christ possesses:
    • All authority
  • The church must:
    • Go
    • Make disciples
    • Baptize
    • Teach

D. The Consummation (Revelation 5:9-10)
  • Revelation 5:9-10.
  • Christ purchased people from:
    • Every tribe
    • Every language
    • Every people
    • Every nation
  • The Lamb will receive the reward of His suffering.

II. God's Mission and the Church's Participation (20-30 Minutes)
A. Central Principle: The church does not possess a mission. God possesses a mission and graciously includes His church in it.
  • John 20:21
B. God's mission originates in the Father's plan
  • Accomplished by the Son
  • Applied by the Spirit
  • The church is the instrument.
C. God's sovereignty fuels missions. It does not diminish missions.
  • Acts 18:9-10.
  • Election encouraged evangelism.
    • God ordains the ends.
    • God ordains the means.
    • Therefore: Pray. Send. Go. Preach.
