Text: James 2:8–13
Big Idea: Christianity is all-or-nothing & genuine faith passes three tests: keeping the whole law, being judged by the whole law, and being shown mercy.
I. The Royal Law Demands Total Love (vv. 8–9)
- The law of love (Lev. 19:18) commends those who keep it
- Favoritism exposes a broken law — and breaking one point means breaking all
II. The Whole Law Stands or Falls Together (vv. 10–11)
- One violation makes a person accountable for the whole law
- The Rich Young Ruler illustrates the danger of partial obedience
- God is the Lawgiver over all His commands, not just some
III. The Law of Liberty Calls Us to Mercy (vv. 12–13)
- True freedom is living under the law of liberty, not apart from law
- Judgment without mercy awaits those who show no mercy
- Mercy triumphs over judgment — pointing to Christ's mercy on our behalf
IV. Gospel Resolution: Christ Fulfilled What We Could Not
- Five responses to conviction — only repentance is valid
- Christ bore the curse of the whole law (Gal. 3) and fulfilled it for us
- The standard that crushes becomes the standard Christ met in our place
