Week 8: The Bible’s Big Storyline
Title: The Fall: How Everything Broke and Why It Matters

Theme: Sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, rupturing God’s good design. But even in judgment, God gave a promise of redemption.

I. Introduction

II. Genesis 3
  • Verses 1–7: The temptation and the Fall
  • Verses 8–13: The confrontation
  • Verses 14–19: The curse and consequences
  • Verses 20–24: Expulsion from Eden, but a glimmer of hope

III. Theological Foundations of the Fall
1. Sin Begins with Doubting God's Word (vv. 1–5)
  • The serpent twists God's words and casts doubt on His goodness.
  • Sin always begins with questioning God's authority and character.

2. Sin Is Rebellion Against God's Design (vv. 6–7)
  • Eve saw, desired, and took — the language of covetousness and autonomy.
  • Adam was passive and complicit.

3. The Curse Impacts All Creation (vv. 14–19)
  • Judgment hits every relationship:
    • With God (spiritual death)
    • With others (blame, domination)
    • With creation (toil, pain, death)

4. God Gives a Promise of Redemption (v. 15)
  • Genesis 3:15 — the protoevangelium (first gospel)

IV. The Fall in the Big Story
  • Temptation
  • Exile
  • Death
  • Promise

V. Discussion Questions
  • Why does Genesis 3 help us make sense of the world today?
  • What lies about God does the serpent still use today?
  • How does Genesis 3 help you better understand the gospel?

VI. Conclusion
  • Even in the midst of the curse, God gives a promise.
Jesus is the faithful Adam who resisted temptation, bore the curse, and restores what was lost.
