The Communicable Attributes of God: Reflecting His Character in Our Lives
Objective: understand what communicable attributes are, see how they flow from God’s nature, and identify ways to grow in reflecting these attributes in daily Christian living.
I. Introduction
II. Brief Definition
Incommunicable attributes: Belong to God alone.
Communicable attributes: those perfections of God of which there is some reflection in man; We do not possess these qualities perfectly. We grow into them through grace.
III. Core Communicable Attributes
A. Moral Attributes (God’s character)
Examples: holiness, righteousness, goodness
Scripture: 1 Peter 1:15
Explanation: God is perfectly holy. We are called to pursue holiness in heart and conduct.
B. Attributes of Love
Examples: love, mercy, grace, compassion
Scripture: Ephesians 4:32
Explanation: God’s love is self-giving and covenant-keeping. Christian love shows patience, forgiveness, and commitment.
C. Attributes of Wisdom
Examples: wisdom, truthfulness, faithfulness
Scripture: James 1:5
Explanation: God’s knowledge is perfect. Our wisdom grows as we submit to His Word.
D. Attributes of Sovereign Action in Us
Examples: will, purpose, creativity
Scripture: Philippians 2:12-13
Explanation: God works in us to shape desire and action.
