Covenants as the Structure of Scripture
Text Focus: Genesis 9; 12; 19–24; 2 Samuel 7; Jeremiah 31; Luke 22
Theme: God relates to His people through covenants that unfold His redemptive purpose. Goal: Students grasp the unity of God’s covenants and see Christ as their fulfillment.
A. Defining Covenant
A covenant is a binding relationship initiated by God, with promises and obligations.
Lawrence (ch. 4): “Covenant is how God brings His people into His story.”
Analogy: Wedding vows—personal yet formal; love expressed through commitment.
B. Major Covenants
Recurring pattern: promise → failure → renewal → fulfillment.
C. Christ and the Covenants (5 min)
Jesus embodies every covenant:
Obedient Son → new Adam
Faithful Israelite → new Moses
Eternal King → new David
“In Him all the promises of God find their Yes” (2 Cor 1:20).
