Sermon Outline 10.5.25

Title: What Is Man? Majesty and Mercy in Psalm 8
Introduction

1. The Majesty of God (vv.1, 9)
The psalm begins and ends the same way. All the reflections in between are bracketed by praise. Before you ever get to “What is man?” you start with “Who is God?”
Majestic means exalted, splendid, weighty. We don’t even have words really.
His name fills the earth — you can’t escape it..

2. The Mystery of Man (vv.2–8)
a. Strength through weakness (v.2)
This is how God works. He uses weakness to silence His enemies. Jesus quoted this in Matthew 21:16 when children cried out “Hosanna!” in the temple.
It’s a reminder of your lack of strength and God’s strength.

b. The smallness of man (vv.3–4)
What is man? “Man” = enosh, frail, mortal. “Son of man” = ben adam, son of dust.
Nebuchadnezzar is the warning.

c. The dignity of man (vv.5–8)
Genesis 1:26–28 — made in God’s image, crowned with royal stewardship.
Henry said, “Man lacks but little of God.” No passage asserts our dignity more boldly.
We were given dominion — creative work, stewardship, care of creation.
Hebrews 2 says Adam lost his crown. Our glory is marred. Our dominion is broken.

3. The Son of Man (Heb 2:5–9; 1 Cor 15:27; Eph 1:22)
Hebrews 2 quotes Psalm 8.
1 Corinthians 15 says all things are under His feet. Ephesians 1 says God gave Him as head over all things to the church. Psalm 110 says His enemies are His footstool.

Conclusion
Our need
Our duty
Our hope
